IA Writer Pro - brand new beautiful writing suite

After the very popular IA Writer comes another interesting plain text writing app called IA Writer Pro. This new app for Mac and iOS of course, also supports Markdown[1] for easy formatting while writing. I definitely want to test this app. Too bad that it is a bit expensive to try out though, it costs $19.99 each for both Mac and iOS.

Information Architects has made a complete writing suite with a simple workflow and syntax analysis. The new feature called Syntax Control scans English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish text (of course no Swedish as usual…), and highlights your adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, or conjunctions, and dims everything else. This should help you focusing on your writing. On iOS Syntax Control only works for English text. At least for now.

Writer Pro’s workflow is built around how we work when writing. The different workflow states has a task-specific font and color to help you focus on what you are doing.

In the Note state you structure your thoughts and ideas. The Writer app avoids formatting settings for fonts and colors. All you can do is write. In the Write state you get the right font and colors to help you focusing on writing, that together with Syntax Control and more makes it a pleasure to work with the text. As soon as you type, the title bar disappears and all you see is a clean typing sheet. Writer Pro supports Markdown so you can format your text without taking your hands of the keyboard. That’s one reason why I love using plain text editors and Markdown.

The Edit and Read state has fonts and colors that fits what you are doing too. IA Writer Pro syncs with iCloud (I can’t find any info about if it supports Dropbox too though, I need that), and any edits you do are instantly synced to your iOS devices and Mac’s.

Writer Pro are using very beautiful custom typography. It uses typefaces from the design studios Bold Monday and Klimtype Foundry.

Some of the features:

  • Workflow states
  • Custom typefaces, carefully set for optimal readability
  • In-app preview
  • Reading time, plus sentence, word, and character count
  • Real-time iCloud sync
  • Ready for retina displays
  • Full screen
  • Convert Markdown to Microsoft Word 2007 .docx, and back again

  1. Markdown is a lightweight markup language, originally created by John Gruber and Aaron Swartz allowing people “to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format, then convert it to structurally valid XHTML (or HTML)”. See more posts tagged MarkDown.  ↩
