In this video I wanted to talk about the XTEINK X4 - the e-Reader that I love so much at the moment and the e-Reader company that everyone is talking about at the moment. The XTEINK X4 together with my iPhone Air is everything I need for reading ebooks at the moment. All in sync using KOReader sync between Readest on my iPhone Air and Crosspoint on my XTEINK X4.
The XTEINK X4: The "Magic" Pocket E-Reader
That Cures Doomscrolling
1. Introduction: The Magical Cure for the Infinite Feed
Modern smartphones are engineered to generate a specific "neurological friction." In those fleeting interstitial moments—standing in a checkout line or waiting for a train—we instinctively reach for our phones, only to be trapped by the dopamine loops of the "infinite feed." This cycle of mindless doomscrolling is the antithesis of intentionality.
The XTEINK X4 is a sophisticated exit strategy. It is a "magical" tool not because of high-end specs, but because of its placement: it puts a dedicated library directly in your physical path. By living on the back of your phone, it transforms every brief wait into a meaningful literary session. The central thesis is simple: the X4 makes you read more by making literature more immediate than distraction.
2. Hardware Design: A Feather-Light Sliver of Technology
The XTEINK X4 is a masterclass in minimalist hardware, mirroring the footprint of a credit card while functioning as a robust, open-architecture reading platform.
- Display: 4.3-inch E-ink (220 PPI).
- Weight: 74g.
- Thickness: 5.9mm.
- Microcontroller: ESP32-C3 (The engine behind its efficiency and hackability).
- Storage: Lacks internal storage; relies entirely on the included 32GB microSD (expandable to 512GB).
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth.
The device features a MagSafe-compatible magnetic attachment system. This "pop-on, pop-off" workflow allows the X4 to live on the back of an iPhone or Android device, ensuring your library is always with you.
Critically, the X4 avoids the "glass slab" trend by omitting a touchscreen. This is a deliberate ergonomic choice.
"This device should never have a touch display... a nightmare of accidental page turns and smudge-filled displays."
Physical buttons provide the tactile, reliable feedback required for "blind" navigation, ensuring the interface never gets in the way of the prose.
3. The "3-Second Rule" and the Habit of Micro-Reading
In the battle for attention, speed is the deciding factor. Premium readers like Kindles or the Boox Palma often suffer from "wake up" delays or Wi-Fi handshakes that create just enough friction to push a user back to Instagram. The X4 utilizes the "3-second rule": one long press of the main button opens your book instantly.
This immediacy facilitates "micro-reading"—the habit of finishing a paragraph in moments otherwise lost to social media.
Usage Comparison: Friction vs. Focus
- The Smartphone: Requires unlocking, navigating notification badges, and resisting the urge to check "one more thing" before finally opening a reading app.
- The XTEINK X4: One long press. Three seconds. You are exactly where you left off, with zero digital distractions and no connectivity lag.
4. Unlocking the Magic: The Power of Community Firmware - CPR-vCodex as an example
The stock software is intentionally barebones, but the "magic" is fully realized through custom, open-source firmware like CPR-vCodex. This fork transforms the device into a habit-building powerhouse, adding features like the Lyra Carousel Home theme, which displays a 3-book cover carousel, and Flashcards study modes (Due, Scheduled, and Infinite) for offline learning via CSV decks. My favorite fork is called CrossInk for it's beautiful typography and easiness.
V-Codex: Features That Drive Consistency
Feature | How it Makes You Read More |
Reading Stats | Tracks totals, streaks, and goal progress to turn reading into a visible, rewarding habit. |
Achievements | Provides "console-style" milestones and popups for finishing books or reaching long-session goals. |
Reading Heatmap | Visualizes reading intensity over a monthly calendar, encouraging you to keep the "chain" going. |
Sync Day | Connects to Wi-Fi to provide a trusted date reference, a necessity since the ESP32-C3 lacks a sleep-resilient real-time clock (RTC). |
Manual Correction | Allows users to subtract or add minutes to a book's stats for missed or accidental sessions, keeping the data integrity of your habit. |
5. Technical Practicality and the "Endurance Beast"
Powered by the efficient ESP32-C3, the X4 is an "endurance beast." A 650mAh battery provides roughly 14 days of use with daily sessions of 1–3 hours. It is a "set it and forget it" companion that outlasts the smartphone it attaches to.
Potential users should be aware of the "UV Achilles' Heel" on the Frost White version. The casing is thin enough that UV light can penetrate the shell, causing E-ink text to fade in direct sunlight. While the text returns to normal once you step indoors, it is a known quirk. The Space Black version, however, is reported to be immune to this sunlight fading issue.
6. The Tinkerer’s Advantage: Open-Source Freedom
The X4 appeals to minimalists who enjoy "fiddling" with their gadgets to reach peak performance. Installation of CPR-vCodex is exceptionally simple via xteink.dve.al. This web-based tool uses OTA fast flash terminology to update the firmware via Chrome or Edge over a USB-C connection in just minutes.
The community-driven utility is evident in apps like:
- "If Found, Please Return Me": Displays owner contact info from a
.txtfile on the SD card. - Advanced Sleep Tools: Customizes sleep images with directory selection and shuffle behavior.
- Format Freedom: While requiring DRM-free EPUBs, custom firmware provides superior typography, including bold/italic support and Lexend font bindings.
7. Conclusion: The Power of Doing Less
The XTEINK X4 is not trying to be a tablet; it is a platform for focus. In an age of maximalist distractions, it proves that the most powerful feature a device can offer is the choice to do less. By stripping away the browser and the notifications, the X4 leaves behind only what matters: the next page.
Final Verdict
- Extreme Portability: Lives on the back of your phone, keeping a library in your physical path at all times.
- Tactile Focus: Physical buttons over a touchscreen prevent accidental turns and maintain a smudge-free display.
- Habit Transformation: Leverages the ESP32-C3's efficiency and the "3-second rule" to turn micro-moments into literary progress.
