How to Automatically set Book Cover as Screensaver on Android-based ebook Readers

I get a lot of comments with questions about how to set book cover from books you read in KOReader as the screensaver on Android based e-Readers. It’s a bit tricky but I have done a few videos showing how. Below you can read two different methods on how you can achieve this, both automatically on some devices and semi-auto on some.

Here is two different methods:

1. The Saved Image Path Method (Automatic for Boox devices for example)

For certain Android devices, particularly Onyx Boox, KOReader can be configured to overwrite a specific image file that the system then uses as its screensaver.

Preparation: Create a folder named /pictures/ in the device’s root directory if it doesn’t already exist. Place a PNG image there and name it “screen saver image.png”. It is also recommended to have a “fallback image” with the same name in case a book lacks a cover.

KOReader Configuration: Open a book, go to the Gear icon (Settings) > Screen > Cover image > Set image path.

Select the File: Browse to your image in the /pictures/ folder and select it by long-pressing the file.

Automation: KOReader will now automatically replace that file with the cover of the book you are currently reading every time you open a new document. You must then ensure your device’s system settings are configured to use that specific file as its permanent screensaver image. Either from the built-in screensaver feauture or by long-pressing on that image from the built-in filamanager and choose to set it as wallpaper/sleepscreen.

Not automatically on all devices: This automatic method currently does not work on Bigme devices (like the B751C), or viwoods devices like the AiPaper Reader. On these devices, you must manually go into the file manager, open the updated image in the /pictures/ folder, and select “set as standby picture/set as Wallpaper” every time you change books.

2. The “Transparent Screensaver” Method (The Shortcut Hack)

This is a popular alternative for devices like the Onyx Boox Palma or viwoods AiPaper Reader to quickly display the cover before putting the device to sleep.

System Setting: Open your Android device’s native settings and look for the screensaver options. Select “Transparent”. This setting ensures the device displays whatever was last on the screen when it enters sleep mode.

KOReader Gesture: In KOReader, navigate to Taps and gestures > Gesture manager > Tap Corners.

Assign Function: Set one of the corners (e.g., the bottom right) to the “Book cover” function.

Usage: Before putting the device to sleep, tap the assigned corner to bring up the full-screen book cover. Then, press the physical power button. Because of the “Transparent” system setting, the cover will remain visible as the screensaver.

By using these methods, you can achieve a personalized experience on your Android e-reader similar to the automatic cover features found on Kobo or Kindle devices. For better battery life while using these features, it is also advised to enable “Disable Wi-Fi connection when inactive” in the network menu.
