KOReader for beginners

KOReader is a powerful alternative software for e-readers like Kobo, jailbroken Kindles, and Android-based devices that offers far more control than standard factory interfaces. While its extensive menus can seem overwhelming at first, following a few key setup steps will transform your device into the ultimate reading machine.

1. Simplify Your Library

To avoid getting lost in KOReader’s advanced file manager, beginners should create a dedicated folder named “Books”. Put your EPUB files there, then long-press the folder and select “Set as home folder”. Now, every time you open KOReader or tap the “Home” icon, you will go directly to your library.

2. Perfect the Typography

KOReader allows you to override a book’s internal formatting to match your preferences.

  • Fonts: The Atkinson Hyperlegible font is highly recommended for its clarity.
  • Style Tweaks: Navigate to the “Style tweaks” menu and enable “Ignore publisher horizontal margins” and “Ignore publisher line heights”. This allows you to set your own margins and spacing.
  • Set as Default: A crucial tip is to long-press any setting (like a specific font size or margin level) and select “Set as default”. This ensures the setting applies to every new book you open.

3. Customize Your Status Bar

The status bar at the bottom of the screen is fully customizable. You can choose to show only the information you find useful, such as:

  • Pages left in the chapter/book.
  • Current time and battery percentage.
  • Progress bar with chapter markers, which shows you how long each chapter is. You can also adjust the font size and margins of the status bar to ensure it is readable but not distracting.

4. Leverage Wireless Power

KOReader excels at connecting your devices without needing a USB cable.

  • Calibre Integration: You can connect to your Calibre library wirelessly via the OPDS catalog to browse and download books directly to your e-reader.
  • Syncing: Use the built-in progress sync or the Readest plugin to synchronize your reading position across multiple devices, such as your phone and your e-reader.
  • File Transfer: The FileBrowserPlus plugin allows you to manage and upload books to your e-reader wirelessly through a web browser on your computer or smartphone.

5. Smart Gestures and Statistics

Make the most of the touch screen by setting up Tap Zones. For example, you can set the entire screen to turn pages forward on a tap, while using a swipe to go back. You can also program the corners of the screen to quickly show reading statistics, which track your average time per page, total reading time, and even provide a calendar view of your reading habits.
