Bookfusion Ink - A new interesting Firmware for XTEINK X4 X3 X4 Pro and X4C

BookFusion Ink Turns Tiny Pocket E-Readers Into Cloud-Synced Powerhouses

With a single browser-based flash, BookFusion’s new custom firmware transforms XTEINK’s minimalist hardware into a seamless extension of your digital library.

Micro e-readers have quietly carved out one of the most compelling niches in personal tech. Devices like the ultra-thin XTEINK X3 and the 4.3-inch X4 lineup—spanning the original X4, the button-driven X4 Classic, and the touchscreen-equipped, front-lit X4 Pro—offer something modern smartphones cannot: a featherweight, distraction-free E Ink screen that slips into a coin pocket or snaps magnetically onto the back of a phone. Yet for all their hardware charm, tiny e-readers have historically suffered from a glaring software limitation. Reading on a secondary pocket device meant living on a digital island, manually sideloading EPUB files and losing track of your reading position the moment you switched back to a tablet, desktop, or full-sized e-reader at home.

BookFusion Ink changes that equation entirely. Developed directly by the team behind the cross-platform BookFusion reading service, this new custom firmware replaces the stock operating system on XTEINK’s microcontroller-powered hardware and turns these minimalist gadgets into native, cloud-connected BookFusion terminals. Currently rolling out from public beta into general availability, the firmware supports the XTEINK X4, X4 Classic, X4 Pro, and the smaller 3.7-inch X3, with broader support planned for additional micro e-readers built on the same ESP32 chip architecture.

For avid readers who bounce between hardware ecosystems, the appeal is immediate. Once running BookFusion Ink, an XTEINK device automatically synchronizes your entire cloud library, custom bookshelves, series collections, and even saved web articles. More importantly, it keeps reading progress, bookmarks, and text highlights in lockstep across every screen you own. You can read a few pages on an XTEINK X4 Pro while waiting for a train, pick up the exact same paragraph on an iPhone, Android phone, or Android E Ink tablet, and even sync seamlessly with a Kobo or a jailbroken Kindle running KOReader via BookFusion’s plugin. For commuters who switch from text to audio, progress even bridges across to BookFusion’s Apple CarPlay integration.

Historically, installing alternative firmware on budget E Ink hardware required command-line utilities and a high tolerance for tinkering. BookFusion Ink adopts the frictionless, browser-based Web Serial approach popularized by open-source community projects like CrossPoint. With the e-reader powered on at its home screen and connected to a computer via its pogo-pin USB cable, the BookFusion web installer automatically detects the exact XTEINK model—eliminating the risk of flashing the wrong hardware profile. A single click writes the firmware to the device. After a quick reboot, connecting to a local Wi-Fi network, and typing a short verification code into BookFusion’s web portal, the reader immediately populates with your active books.

In day-to-day use on hardware like the XTEINK X4 Pro, the interface feels purposefully tailored to small-screen reading. Books download over Wi-Fi for offline access, the built-in front light works natively, and the X4 Pro’s capacitive touchscreen allows you to drag a finger across a sentence to save a highlight straight to the cloud. That said, the early firmware still shows a few beta rough edges in its typographic controls. While readers can switch to bookish typefaces like Literata, loosen line spacing, and tighten page margins, the maximum font size ceiling remains somewhat conservative—an area where future updates will need to deliver more granular customization.

Even with those early software quirks, BookFusion Ink represents a pivotal moment for the micro e-reader category. By pairing sub-$100, ultra-portable E Ink hardware with a mature, hardware-agnostic cloud backend, BookFusion has solved the biggest friction point of pocket reading: making sure the book in your pocket always knows exactly where you left off.
