Have It All
It has long been the problem that you can't easily have dynamic, free flowing music in a sequencer. Oh sure you can record a beautiful performance to an audio file with your computer, and you can groove quantize MIDI, but to record a truly natural, free flowing MIDI sequence and be able to notate it and play it on any MIDI device and still have it sound as beautiful as it was originally played, that's something else altogether. To do that you need a variable-tempo system and a simple way to transform a real, human, performance into a sequence where bars and beats actually have meaning. Now we know you've got your Logic, Cubase and Digital Performer, and we know you enjoy your AppleLoops from time to time. But wouldn't it be great to have a flowing dynamic, beautiful, performance, and all those things as well?
Now you can. Intuem brings all these together in a fresh and simple, yet powerful way.
Use the note refitters to transform your sequence, and Intuem's variable-tempo system to drive another sequencer like Apple's Logic Express and Soundtrack Pro or any sequencer that responds to MIDI Machine Control (MMC), MIDI Clock or MIDI Time Code (MTC). If your sequencer has specific MIDI devices, audio effects or AppleLoops or a special feature you need, you can have all that and a beautiful dynamic performance that is meaningful to your sequencer because it lines-up exactly with bar and beat boundaries, something your loops and rhythm machines will appreciate. With Intuem doing the driving you can have everything.
Audio Acrobatics
Sometimes you need to add effects to a group of tracks at once, or apply effects in real-time to AudioUnit MIDI instruments, and now you can.
With Intuem 4, you can create a chain of one track outputting to another, each applying effects as needed on the combined mix.
Check out the example to the right: The two MIDI tracks, Lead & Rumble use the FM7 AudioUnit instrument. You want to apply some equalisation to the FM7 output and can do that by creating an audio track (named "MIDI Effects" in this example) and setting the FM7 to output to it then adding the EQ effect to the new track.
What if you want to apply a bit of reverb to the entire mix? To do that you simply create another audio track (named "Final Aux" in this example) and have the two audio tracks for Vox & Guitar and the MIDI Effects track output to it. Add the reverb to the new audio track and you're done. When you're mixing you can control the output volume of the entire mix with one track: "Final Aux." All effects and mixing will be applied in real-time with no need for freezing audio tracks. You can have as many of these auxiliary tracks as you want and have as many effects on each as your computer can handle.
AudioUnit Presets & Automation Recording the Easy Way
AudioUnit presets are a boon to productivity--no need to set-up a zillion parameters or risking loosing your AU's state every time you open your composition--and Intuem puts them at your fingertips like no other app with a toolbar attached to every AudioUnit panel window. It's an Intuem first and you're going to get a lot of use from it...
From the toolbar you can see what preset is currently loaded, choose a preset from the pop-up, which automatically finds the presets saved in standardised locations on your Mac to make things faster, or load one from any file. You can also create a preset at any time by clicking "Save as Preset." Not to be outdone you can also choose the current automation mode from the pop-up on the right hand end, because in Intuem 4 you can record automation right off the controls on an AudioUnit panel.
As Much At Your Fingertips As You Like
You want instant access to the things that matter most and you've got it with new track controls.
On audio tracks you now have a pop-up for the current take, a pop-up for the audio input device along with a play-through button and a pop-up for the audio output device/track.
With MIDI tracks you have instant access to the current take, the MIDI device, the device channel and the current program.
It's a fine-line between usability and confusion--too many buttons and pop-ups will overwhelm some users, not enough will frustrate others. You're the best judge and that's why we made it so that you can choose which controls appear in which display styles so you have everything just as you like it.
As for the other controls that you use less often, they're tucked away separately in the Inspector so you can still get to them; and can still get rid of them when you're on a roll.
Master (of) All You Survey
With Intuem, you can always edit your music as you see it in front of you, there are no special editing windows to hide the other tracks making editing confusing and keeping you out-of-touch with the rest of your composition. Intuem doesn’t sacrifice editability either: you can have your tracks in any of three ways: micro overview style, standard music notation and mega, a piano-roll style, and you can switch them and mix-and-match them to suit your needs. For example, when you’re editing in mega, you can have the other tracks in micro to help you stay in context, and when it’s time to play-along or print, put them in notation style.
Think Dark
The new darker style in Intuem 4 gives you a sleeker, smarter controller with new pencil tools for drawing perfectly straight lines, smooth quadratic curves (four different ways), smooth cubic curves (four different ways, too) and very natural sounding sinus curves. And because Intuem lets you see exactly what you're making, you can control the event density of these new tools too. But that's not all--the controller has a mind of its own and can intelligently follow the composition around on screen, keeping itself just where you want it--another Intuem first.
Sequencing on a Grand Scale
Wouldn't it be great to sequence with blocks the size of entire compositions, projects, MIDI files or audio files? Well, yes of course it would!
Intuem 4 has a Playlist that lets you sequence any file that Intuem can open. You can create any number of playlists and call them up at anytime. Intuem will automatically open the files when needed so they're available for seamless playback. You can even choose a start time offset so files can play before the previous one stops, giving you a file-by-file overlap to ensure everything sounds just as you like. You can loop the playlist, and most importantly, control it with your Apple Remote.
Note Refitters
They're Intuem's killer feature and we've made them even better. Not only can you squeeze and stretch notes to fit them into the bars and beats where they belong, but you can now shift notes in time to bring a section to the right starting point. The note refitters now automatically snap to the exact boundaries of a selection when you bring them on-screen and they also automatically quantise the appearance of your music giving you instant results.

No other sequencer for the Mac has the amazingly useful Note Refitters, and they are the key to making dynamic, natural sounding, variable tempo music with your computer. With Intuem's new synchronisation abilities you can work with a beautiful, living performance in Intuem while enjoying the AppleLoops, video synchronisation and more through other sequencers running in sync.
Mix Easier
A new mixer mode allows you to set the control levels for any control over the entire duration of a composition or a part of a composition. Combined with the "Master", "Slave" and "Write" modes you can setup the mixer to behave exactly as you want it to. You'll never have to deal with surprise control resets or unexpected control overwrites again.
Intuem's mixer controls add a new level of ease-of-use to software mixers. The controls show value ranges proportionally and are easier to read and control with the mouse than conventional linear or circular sliders. There's even a dedicated controller for graphic equalisers and similar slider arrays.
Intuem's mixer controls are unlike any other sequencers' because not only do you get to control MIDI & AudioUnit parameters in the mixer, but you get to choose what kind of controls to use and how they appear on screen.
Express Event List Editing
Not only will Intuem synchronise and mix with the rest of them, but you can edit like them too. Actually, better than them. Intuem has facility to edit a track in a list view via the Event Inspector with two new tweaks: double-clicking any audio clip, controller event or note will automatically open the item for editing and while editing you can go to the next or previous event in the list with handy navigation buttons.
The Event Inspector gives you a listing of all the events in a track, which is a lot to view at once, so we made it possible for you to filter the list. Set the Inspector to show all events in the track or all notes or all events of a particular controller or even all events for a particular AudioUnit effect and so on. Best of all you have custom editors for every single event type from tempo, meter and key signatures, to notes, controllers, AudioUnit parameters, and even system exclusive messages with the simplest and easiest to use Hex/ASCII editor you've ever seen.
You can do things in the Event Inspector you can't do elsewhere like edit the position of audio clips by bar & beat, time in seconds, or time in sample frames at any supported sample rate and can force a sample rate change too. What's more, Intuem now supports pitch-specific after touch and special RPN/NRPN events that let you include a button or data value in one event.
Intuem does ReWire
Intuem is a complete ReWire mixer with the ability to use any ReWire device, like Reason for example. You can connect and control ReWire devices with Intuem and hear their audio output through an Intuem audio track, through any AudioUnit processing you want on the track and then through Intuem's mixer out to your speakers. You can choose any combination of audio channels and stream up to 24 channels at once from each device. Intuem can send MIDI to ReWire devices just as Intuem does with any MIDI device and all the specific continuous controllers defined for each ReWire bus & channel combination are automatically identified by Intuem and made available for editing. You can convert ReWire MIDI tracks to audio, and freeze ReWire audio tracks into a single audio clip as well as record un-processed audio from ReWire devices.
ReWire devices are managed through a preferences panel that gives you control over the streaming sample rate and which MIDI keyboard will be used with ReWire tracks to record MIDI. Each device on your computer appears in the panel and its current state is indicated. You can open and close devices here as well, and you can set devices to automatically open when Intuem starts so they're always available.
Since compositions can reference ReWire devices as audio sources and precise MIDI destinations, when you save your composition, all those connection details are saved too. When next you open the composition, whether the ReWire devices are available and in the same state as before doesn't matter. Intuem will automatically attach the tracks to the right devices as soon as the ReWire devices appear and their state matches the composition. You'll never have to manually re-attach the tracks to the ReWire devices.
Something for Everyone.
Intuem has three styles for the composition window: original Aqua, brushed metal, or the newer standard dark style. The mixer has two styles too: brushed metal, and the newer standard dark style with new controls and mixer modes.
There's function to this fashion: the new darker style in Intuem 4 represents a more pro-oriented interface with more buttons on screen and newer more sophisticated tools that not everyone will want; the brushed metal represents a step toward a simpler interface, and the Aqua style gives a novice no more than what's needed.
You can choose the interface style that suits your ability and change when you want to. We think it's much smarter than selling you a cut-down version of Intuem and making you pay for more when you inevitably need it!
