The iOS app is finally capable of fetching mail in the background, so new stuff can hit your inbox at any given time – not just when you open the app. For the background app refresh to work as intended, however, the company points out that notifications will need to be turned on

Typical. Me who has just switched back to using my gmail account directly in the Apple mail app instead. But I still thinks that the Gmail app has a bit awkwardly navigation so I prefer the simpler and user friendly Apple mail app. And I also use my Microsoft exchange account in the same app, and that still can’t the gmail app handle. I prefer having my email in one app.
