Inbox by Gmail - my first thoughts

I've got an invite for Google's new Gmail app called “Inbox by Gmail”. I've tried it out and it's ok, but without an iPad app it's a no go for me. I need an iPad app because as you know I use it instead of computers. I like the idea though, filtering and sorting my email so I can easier get Inbox Zero is always good. And having both a reminder and a defer feature is very useful. But it looks very much as the app Mailbox, but personally I think Mailbox is better and has even more features.

I would prefer if Google has followed Apple's UI guidelines when they designed the app though. I don't like the buttons at the top for example. It's awkward to have to reach for them on a large device like the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus. Same thing with the back button.

To me Inbox by Gmail looks to much Android now and not so much like an iOS app.

This is the main project that the developer from the awesome iOS mail app Sparrow has been working on since Google bought it. And it shows.

Another drawback is that it only supports Gmail and nothing else. I need Microsoft Exchange support and Apple mail (me.com) support too.

The app drains the battery quite much too. More than Apple's own mail app. But it's just an early beta so it probably will be better over time.

Today, we’re introducing something new. It’s called Inbox. Years in the making, Inbox is by the same people who brought you Gmail, but it’s not Gmail: it’s a completely different type of inbox, designed to focus on what really matters.
