Apple is making a much better wireless charging technology - could be available 2017

Apple is developing a better and more useful wireless charging than existing today.

Apple is exploring cutting-edge technologies that would allow iPhones and iPads to be powered from further away than the charging mats used with current smartphones, the people said, asking not to be identified as the details are private. The iPhone maker is looking to overcome technical barriers including loss of power over distance with a decision on implementing the technology still being assessed, they said.

I have never seen the point with the existing wireless charging that you need to have a charging mat that you lay the device on. It's bigger and take more space than the normal iOS charger. And it takes two seconds to plug the iPhone in with the awesome lightning port.

And I'm sure Apple knows that the existing technology is totally pointless too. That's probably the reason why they haven't adapted that technology for the iPhone yet. They want to made it right first, and this actually sounds like it could be right. Sounds much more useful.

It's not always best to be first you know, it's more important to make it right.
