Does the iPhone 15 really need Solid State Buttons instead of real buttons as it has now?

The rumours and leaks says that the coming iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max (or Ultra?), will have Capacitive Buttons, Solid State Buttons instead of the mute switch and Volume buttons. Why? What are the benefits with that? I am not sure why but one possibilty is that it will programmable Action Buttons, exactly the same as on the Apple Watch Ultra. That means that we can programme them to do the stuff we want instead of the functions of the real buttons we have today.
