XTEINK X4C - A kind of a review and talk about the love for micro e-readers

Why the Best E-Reader Is the One That Disappears in Your Pocket

With the 4.9mm-thin XTEINK X4 Classic, the case for ultra-compact "micro" e-readers has never been sharper—or brighter.

For years, the e-reader industry has been locked in a quiet arms race of expansion. Screens have stretched from six inches to seven, then ten, and finally into tablet-sized digital notebooks complete with styluses, color filters, and heavyweight operating systems. Yet for anyone whose primary goal is simply to read more books every day, the most exciting hardware revolution is happening in the opposite direction. Welcome to the era of the micro e-reader—and right now, no device captures its appeal quite like the XTEINK X4 Classic.

To understand the micro e-reader, you have to look smaller than even palm-sized, smartphone-style E Ink devices. At just 4.9 millimeters thick and weighing a mere 68 grams, the 4.3-inch XTEINK X4 Classic is thinner than most phone cases and lighter than a minimalist wallet. Compared to the first-generation X4, XTEINK shaved off a full millimeter of thickness while somehow packing in a larger 920 mAh battery. The engineering payoff is immediately obvious in the hand: it boasts the sturdiest chassis and most tactile physical page-turn buttons the company has ever built, yet it vanishes into a shirt pocket and runs for weeks on a single charge.

The real magic of the X4 Classic, however, lies in what XTEINK left out. Unlike its sibling, the X4 Pro, the Classic skips both a capacitive touchscreen and a built-in front light. On paper, that sounds like a downgrade; in practice, it creates the sharpest, whitest, and highest-contrast display in the entire XTEINK lineup. Without two extra optical layers sitting on top of the 219 PPI E Ink panel, the raw electronic ink sits right at the surface. Pair that bright, paper-white background with a bold, 20-point Bitter typeface in the CrossPoint firmware, and the crisp black text practically leaps off the screen—making it effortless to read without reaching for reading glasses.

Of course, stripping away the front light and touchscreen introduces real-world trade-offs, especially during the dark Nordic autumn and winter months when daylight is scarce. While XTEINK sells a clever USB-C rechargeable magnetic clip-on reading lamp with stepless dimming, the X4 Classic is naturally at its best under office lamps or daylight. That makes it half of a two-device rhythm alongside the X4 Pro. Where the Classic reigns supreme from morning commute to afternoon coffee break, the X4 Pro steps in at bedtime—offering a warm front light for pitch-black rooms and touchscreen convenience for typing Wi-Fi passwords or long-pressing words to pull up an Oxford Dictionary definition, save clippings, and drop bookmarks.

What prevents this multi-device habit from feeling fragmented is the software tying it all together. Running the community-driven CrossPoint firmware with CrossPoint Reader Sync transforms these tiny, ESP32-powered gadgets into nodes of a unified reading ecosystem. Progress, book libraries, clippings, and granular reading statistics sync effortlessly to a central web dashboard. Even better, CrossPoint bridges the gap between micro readers and the rest of the E Ink world—linking with BookFusion, syncing via KOReader servers on Kobo and Kindle hardware, and connecting to an Android companion app that runs on larger E Ink phones. You can put down the X4 Classic at your desk and pick up right on the same page elsewhere.

There are still minor quirks to navigate. The X4 Classic relies on magnetic pogo pins rather than a direct USB-C port, though pairing it with XTEINK's weighted desktop charging stand turns that quirk into a clean, drop-and-charge desk setup. And while its repositioned rear magnets don't align as neatly on the back of every phone as the original X4 did, the broader takeaway remains undeniable: when an e-reader is small enough to go everywhere, every spare minute becomes reading time.
